Fybogel

Fybogel is a bulk forming laxative and is indicated to help relieve constipation and maintain regularity. By working naturally with the body, Fybogel uses soluble fibre to increase the bulk of stools, making them easier to pass and helping you to go to the toilet. Fybogel comes in sachets and chewable tablets.

Fybogel sachets contains Ispaghula Husk, also known as ‘psyllium husk’, and mixes with water to form a gel-like drink. This product is available in a range of flavours, including orange and lemon.

Fybogel FibreChews contains Fibersol-2. This convenient, citrus flavoured, chewable format can be taken on the go without the need for water and a glass

History

Fybogel was launched by Reckitt & Coleman in 1974 with a plain sachet offering. An orange variant was introduced in 1982 and later a lemon sachet was launched in 1995. For 47 years, the powder was the only format within the range prior to the launch of Fybogel FibreChews in 2021.

Fybogel Frequently Asked Questions

It takes 2 to 3 days for Fybogel to work.

Talk to your doctor if you are still constipated after 3 days. They may be able to suggest a different medicine.

Ideally, you'll only use Fybogel occasionally and for a few days at a time. Using laxatives for longer can lead to diarrhoea. Stop taking it if you get diarrhoea.

It can also cause an electrolyte imbalance, where levels of substances like sodium, potassium and magnesium in your body get too high or too low. A severe electrolyte imbalance can cause serious health problems such as:

  • muscle spasms
  • twitching
  • seizure or fits

There are some situations where you may need to take Fybogel for many months – for instance, if you need to increase the fibre in your diet.

Your doctor will advise you exactly how long you need to take Fybogel for and how much to take.

There are various types of laxatives. Some work in a different way to Fybogel but are equally good at treating constipation.

The NICE (national institute for health and care excellence) guidelines recommend a stepped approach, so first trying bulk-forming laxatives and moving along the chain if unsuccessful and constipation symptoms remain.

  • Bulk-forming (like Fybogel)- increases the weight of the stool, which makes you feel you want to go to the toilet. These laxatives take 2 or 3 days to work.
  • Osmotic - draws water into the bowel, making the stool softer and easier to pass. These laxatives take at least 2 days to work.
  • Stimulants (like Senokot) - stimulates the muscles of the gut, making the bowel work harder to move stools along. These laxatives take 6-12 hours to work.
