Signs and Symptoms of Constipation

What are the symptoms of constipation?

Constipation is a common condition that can affect people of all ages. The severity of constipation and symptoms experienced will vary from person to person. Many people only experience constipation for a short period of time, but for others, constipation can be a long-term condition that can be uncomfortable and can impact their quality of life. Here are some of the symptoms experienced when constipated:

  • Having a poo for less than 3 times in the last 7 days
  • Passing a stool which is large, hard, or lumpy
  • Straining when you have a poo
  • Experiencing pain when you have a poo
  • Tummy pain, bloating and sickness
  • If you’re looking after a person with dementia, a change in behaviour may be a sign that they are constipated

If you have had symptoms for 12 weeks or more in the past 6 months, you could have chronic constipation.

In which case, please consult a doctor or healthcare professional.
